New “In God We Trust” license plates available

State residents can now get an optional standard vehicle registration plate that includes the words “In God We Trust.”

In May, Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill that created the new plates with the phrase. The original legislation would have required the phrase to be on all plates, but the attorney general raised constitutional concerns about that, according to The Associated Press.

So the bill’s sponsors made the new design optional.

The plates can now be picked up locally at the Hamilton County clerk’s office.

The law that regulates the new plates calls for a one-time $2 fee plus the usual $2.50 registration fee.

“The $2 special fee is a one-time charge for swapping, renewing a current registration or making application for a vehicle title,” County Clerk Bill Knowles said in a prepared statement.

After the $2 fee is paid, a motorist can renew the special registration at the standard $29 cost.

The new plate doesn’t require higher fees as other specialty plates do, according to a news release.
