Through a partnership between the City of Chattanooga, Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center, and EPB, city residents + EPB customers can receive up to two free trees per household to plant in their yards.
1,000 native trees will be provided as part of the Free Tree Releaf Program in an effort to enhance the community’s tree canopy so residents can enjoy greater beauty, cleaner air, and the cooling + stormwater drainage benefits that trees can provide.
The program is an extension of the city’s + Reflection Riding’s partnership formed in 2020 to improve stormwater drainage + water quality following the Easter tornadoes.
Program impact
Improves air quality by removing carbon dioxide + adding oxygen
Root network of trees supports stormwater drainage + filters groundwater
Provides substantial cooling benefits
Promotes biodiversity + animal habitats and food
Reduces soil erosion
Promotes lower energy use (rooftop shade can reduce air conditioning costs)
How the program works
While supplies last, residents can visit Reflection Riding(400 Garden Rd.) Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. to receive their trees.
There are 10 native tree species to choose from + the Reflection Riding staff will provide recommendations so your trees can thrive based on the needs of the trees, intended planting location, and soil type.
Additionally, EPB’s Energy Pros will provide free expertise + services about how and where to plant your trees to avoid power lines and protect against potential future damage from falling limbs.
“Chattanooga’s trees help us live up to our reputation as the ‘Scenic City,’ but a healthy tree ecology provides so many benefits,” Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly said. “Adding more trees through programs like Free Tree Releaf will make our city an even better place to live, improving our air quality and helping protect our waterways for future generations to enjoy.”
