For the foodie

Allow someone to experience the restaurants, architecture, and history that make Chattanooga a growing culinary destination with the gift of a food tour from Chatt Taste — choose from a downtown, MLK, Southside, mural and munch, or vegan food tour. Or...

Let friends and family cook their own meal with the gift of a classic in-person, kids, or date night cooking class at The Sweet & Savory Classroom.

For the outdoor adventurer

Gift a guided hiking adventure with Experience Chattanooga. Bonus: tours include transportation and professional photography.

Gift your favorite thrill-seeker a hangliding or paragliding adventure with Lookout Mountain Flight Park, a skydiving experience with Chattanooga Skydiving Co., or a helicopter tour with Chattanooga Helicopters.

Climb up their list of “best gift givers” with a rock climbing class at High Point Fitness.

Book them a swincar (four-wheeled electric vehicle) backcountry tour or the chance to bike on the Tennessee River (yes, you read that right) with Adventure Sports Innovation.

For the attraction frequenter

Gift a year-long membership to one of Chattanooga’s local museums, nature centers, or other cool spots:
Bonus: You can never go wrong with a gift card to The Chattery — your giftee can choose a class to attend surrounding anything from mocktail making to gardening.

Upcoming winter holidays

A paper calendar for December

You’ve probably heard a lot of “happy holidays” this season — with good reason. Plenty of cultures celebrate the start of astronomical winter, the end of the year, or just the coming of cold weather by gathering with loved ones and giving thanks.

Look forward to:
  • Yule (begins Dec. 21), an ancient Germanic solstice festival. Celebrants mark the shortest day of the year and balance between light and dark.
  • Hanukkah (ongoing), the Jewish Festival of Lights which began the evening of Sunday, Dec. 18 and ends on Monday, Dec. 26.
  • Christmas (Dec. 25), a cultural and religious festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ which, if you’ve put off gift shopping until now, there’s still time.
  • Kwanzaa (Dec. 26), a week of African American and pan-African celebration culminating in Karamu on Saturday, Dec. 31.
  • Lunar Bodhi Day (Dec. 30), celebrating the Buddha’s enlightenment through acts of kindness. “Secular” Bodhi Day was celebrated on Dec. 8.
You don’t need to celebrate them all — but let’s all celebrate together.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by Brianna.

Editor’s pick: If you’re hesitant to gift someone an experience over a physical item, let me say this: the aquarium membership I received last year is something I’ve been able to use all year long (rather than wear once or twice and forget about or return immediately), and each time I go to the aquarium, I think of the person who gifted it to me. I’d say that’s a win in the gift-giving game!
