Calling all stargazers. We’ve put together a handy guide of this year’s celestial events so you won’t miss a thing. Grab your calendar, mark down these dates, and start planning your 2023 night sky viewing adventures.
💫 Meteor showers
If you missed the Quadrantid meteor shower on January 3 and 4, fear not — there will be plenty more showers to catch this year. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:
Lyrids: April 22-23
Eta Aquarids: May 6-7
Delta Aquarids: July 28-29
Alpha Capricornids: July 30-31
Perseids: August 12-13
Draconids: October 7
Orionids: October 21-22
Southern Taurids: November 4-5

🌕 Full moons and supermoons
It may technically be the Year of the Water Rabbit, but it’s also the moon’s year to shine. While most years there are 12 full moons, 2023 will welcome 13 (two will occur in August). Here’s the full list, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

When choosing a spot to view celestial events, aim for a location that is away from man-made light. Here are some spots that we suggest:

Teens Flavor Lab Cooking Class Downtown: Pizza | Tuesday, Jan. 17 | 5-6 p.m. | Downtown Library, 1001 Broad St., Chattanooga | Free, RSVP | The library will use a Charlie Cart mobile kitchen to teach young adults delicious, healthy snacks and meals they can make at home.

Cake Decorating 101 | Wednesday, Jan. 18 | 6-8 p.m. | The Chattery, 1800 Rossville Ave., Chattanooga | $65 | In this course, you will be provided with a six-inch premade cake and plenty of buttercream to learn how to create textures and piping techniques.
Thursday, Jan. 19
Nature by the Pint | Thursday, Jan. 19 | 6-7 p.m. | Barley Chattanooga, 235 E. MLK Blvd., Chattanooga | Free+ | This installation of Nature by the Pint will feature the presentation “Thru Hiking in Colorado & Beyond” by the Executive Director at WaterWays, Mary Beth.

Belly Dancing 101 | Friday, Jan. 20 | 6-7:30 p.m. | The Chattery, 1800 Rossville Ave., Chattanooga | $20 | This beginner-friendly belly dancing class teaches basic moves and introduces you to the music and culture from which the dance originates.

OddStory Brewing Co.'s former MLK location is reopening today as The Greenhouse Barrel + Taproom. For today’s grand reopening, the business will have @yummythaicha popping up from 4-10 p.m. 🍺
Development
Downtown Chattanooga’s dome building on Georgia Avenue and 8th Street was purchased by local real estate investment company Fisher Bay. Fisher Bay said that it plans to continue preserving the 100% leased up building. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
A Chattanooga city panel recently approved an iFixit warehouse plan for parking lot improvements and a site change to better enable the use of a loading dock. The project is set to add ~200 more jobs to the area. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

Thanks to a partnership between the Chattanooga Library and CHI Memorial, free art therapy for ages 8-18 begins this week. Classes will take place every week on Wednesdays at the downtown library + Thursdays at the Avondale library. 🎨
