February is Black History Month, a time to honor and recognize the difficulties, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans. Check out some of the local events taking place + other ways to celebrate in Chattanooga.
The History of Hip-Hop | Thursday, Feb. 9 | 6-7:30 p.m. | The Chattery | Free, RSVP | Learn about hip-hop’s history and how it has served as a vehicle for transmitting the experience of being Black in America.
Bonus: The Chattery is also hosting a BHM Challenge — you can get started now on day six of the challenge: register for the history of hip-hop lecture. ☝️

With the community’s help, Sculpture Fields at Montague Park hopes to add an interactive welcome kiosk to its park. The kiosk will allow guests to access park information, see upcoming events, purchase tickets, and more. Folks can donate via the Envelope Challenge online.

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County NAACP Branch is teaming up with CEMPA Community Care to present Double Awareness Day “HIV: Let’s Talk Prep” on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The day will feature free HIV testing opportunities + educational webinars for community members.
Closing
After 64 years in business, Northside Upholsteryannounced that it will close soon. The building (724 N. Market St.) was recently purchased by local developer John Wise, who has plans to replace it with four residential floors + ground-level parking. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

The Chattanooga Beer Board will explore using the “Safe Bar” program by the Family Justice Center in Chattanooga to help keep local bar patrons safe. The program would train participating bartenders to know a safe word a customer can use if they are ever in danger. (Local 3)
