The general election is Nov. 3, and early voting starts on Oct. 14. That may seem like a while from now, but Election Day is only 39 days away.
We want you to be ready to cast your ballot with all the confidence in the world, so we’re breaking down all the 2020 election must-knows for you. In Tennessee, you’ll be voting for United States senators + House members, and of course, the President of the United States.
Some locals will also vote in municipal elections and on amendments.

ComingSoon ○ A new restaurant, the Local Goat, is coming soon to the former Puleo’s Grille in Ooltewah near I-75. The restaurant’s name comes from its practice of sourcing locally + working with area vendors. Slated to open in December, the restaurant will initially employ about 90 workers and will offer a “new American” menu with steaks, gourmet burgers, ribs, and more. 🍔 (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
Biz ○ On Sept. 23, Volkswagen of America unveiled its new electric SUV. The new electric car will start being produced at the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant in 2022, with an anticipated average price of around $35,000. Civic ○ UTC researchers are expanding two projects under the Smart City initiative that track + monitor transportation and pedestrian patterns. The research is being done in collaboration with the city’s department of transportation to help with safety in the downtown Chattanooga area, with the goal being to cut down on car and pedestrian crashes in the area. State ○ Tennessee voters that request absentee by-mail ballots have the ability to track their ballots online. The Secretary of State’s website will allow voters to monitor their vote, and ensure that it is delivered to the county election commission. This year, there is an expected record number of absentee by-mail votes for the Nov. 3 election. WaterCooler ○ The Chattanooga Red Wolves Soccer Club will begin construction on the sky suites and executive club as an addition to CHI Memorial Stadium. The club is now receiving initial interest forms for those interested in reserving a Sky Suite. Volunteer ○ As their inventory levels are dropping, Blood Assurance is making an appeal to younger donors to volunteer at this time. Blood Assurance said that they have seen a drop in younger donors this year due to the continuous blood drive cancellations at schools and workplaces, so they are asking the community of Generation Z + Millennials to donate if they are able.
DYK ○ Country music singer-songwriter Tracy Lawrence is teaming up with Tennessee fire officials for a new fire safety campaign. In the collaboration, Lawrence stars in a series of public service announcements to share fire safety messages. State fire officials have said that with the cooler temperatures coming, there is also a higher risk for home fires. 🔥 (NewsChannel 9)
Cause ○ On Sept. 25, the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer will host an in-person pre-party to its annual Celebration of Life and Hope virtual event. The in-person party will have limited attendance in order to practice social distancing + will give attendees the opportunity to see the new Education Advancement Center. Health ○ Erlanger recently announced the opening of the Erlanger Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Center at Erlanger East Hospital on Gunbarrel Road. The new 4,500 square foot center has four procedure rooms, five pre-operative rooms, five recovery bays, six exam rooms, a lobby + street-level parking. (Chattanoogan.com)

○ In the six months since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Hamilton County Health Department has conducted 80,000 COVID-19 tests, according to data provided by the department. The health department is providing free drive-thru COVID-19 testing seven days a week at the Alstom site (1119 Riverfront Pkwy). (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
○ BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee aims to educate Tennesseeans on the importance of the flu vaccination as the 2020-2021 flu season approaches via a statewide awareness campaign. With the overlap of COVID-19 and the upcoming flu season, the organization said that it is key to be proactive with vaccinations. According to the CDC, those six months and older are encouraged to receive flu vaccinations every year, especially now. For more information regarding the flu + resources to combat it, click here.
○ On Sept. 22, the Hamilton County Health Department reported 69 new COVID-19 cases and one more COVID-19-related death, bringing the county’s toll to 92. Hamilton County now has 1,487 active cases and 52 hospitalized from the virus. (Chattanoogan.com)
