For 100 years, United Way of Greater Chattanooga has been uniting Chattanoogans and resources to help build a stronger, healthier community, and its first century of work is just the beginning. The organization continues to answer the call of our neighbors in need and empower local, on-the-ground nonprofit partners to drive transformational change in our community.

Following the epidemic of cholera, yellow fever, and Spanish flu, in the early 20th century, a group of leaders, including Dr. Tom S. McCallie, established the Chattanooga Community Chest, the precursor to the United Way of Greater Chattanooga. In 1980, the United Fund got a new name: United Way of Greater Chattanooga.

Since 1922 — and through the caring power of tens of thousands of individuals — United Way of Greater Chattanooga has been able to invest in innovative solutions, establish partnerships, and mobilize resources to fight our community’s most dire social problems and help build a community where all individuals reach their full human potential through access to pathways of success and stability.

To help celebrate our community, United Way of Greater Chattanooga is hosting a 100th birthday block party on Sat., Sept. 17 from 5-8 p.m. outside its offices at 630 Market St. — free and open to the public. There will be food trucks, performances by the Pop-Up project, an interactive art experience, face painting + more. All Noogans are invited to celebrate the organization’s 100 years of impact and the upcoming city-wide Impact Days, happening Fri., Sept. 16-Sat., Sept. 17.

See you at the celebration, Chattanooga.*

Good morning, NOOGA — new voice here. My name is Ryan Johnston and I am the CEO of 6AM City, the parent company and publisher of NOOGAtoday. First, thank you for waking up with us every morning and looking to our City Editors, Kristen and Brianna, to help you start your day and get excited about everything NOOGA has to offer.

We launched NOOGAtoday on Sept. 20, 2018 and we couldn’t be more thrilled at how this city has taken to us. We now wake up with 40,486 readers and reach 105,826 people via social media — a big step up from day one.

We built this product based on both reader and advertiser demand. Readers like you were looking for a quick and convenient way to find everything in one place — focused on all things positive and written in a way that is digestible — and (in an effort to keep our product 100% free to readers) we work with advertisers who want to connect with readers like you.

We have a number of different opportunities to advertise directly in this newsletter — find out more by clicking on the link below.

THE WRAP
Answered: D. In 1887, Frances Wisebart Jacobs, the Rev. Myron W. Reed, Msgr. William J.O’Ryan, Dean H. Martyn Hart, and Rabbi William S. Friedman put together an idea that became the nation’s first United Way, a campaign benefitting 10 Denver, CO health and welfare agencies.

Today’s edition was written by Kristen.

Editor’s pick: Although I was incredibly bummed out that the second day of Moon River was canceled due to inclement weather + flooding, I still had such a great time on the first day (you can read more about the highlights here). Didn’t catch the festival? Maybe you bumped into some of the artists around town. Leon Bridges made an appearance at Unknown Caller, and I saw Sammy Rae & Friends climbing at High Point and Zach Bryan make a stop by CBC on their Instagram stories.
