UTC gets a historical donation
Now 88 years old, Dr. Tommie Brown has donated her personal papers to the university. | Photo provided by University of Tennessee Chattanooga
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Library Special Collections recently received a historical donation.
Dr. Tommie Brown, a former UTC professor + Tennessee state legislator, recently donated 125 boxes worth of her personal papers to the university. The papers include letters, photographs, newspaper clippings, and more from the years of her roles in education and politics.
Brown created the social work program at UTC + was the first Black woman to head an academic department at the university in 1980. She was also one of 16 Black women to be elected to the state legislature, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
Now, Brown’s legacy will live on at the university, where folks can read about her accomplishments + view the historical documents at the library.
Did you know that today is also National Tamale Day? Let this be your reason to enjoy these tasty treats today. The chicken + salsa verde tamales from Taqueria Jalisco Ania are my favorite in town, and I definitely recommend trying out the Oaxacan Old Fashioned while you’re there.
