Shoutout to planet Earth for keeping us all grounded. Let’s celebrate.

Saturday, April 22 marks Earth Day — an annual holiday that is celebrated by more than a billion people across 193 countries. This year’s campaign is “Invest In Our Planet,” and to help you do so, EarthDay.org has a plethora of resources that can help you get involved on local, national, and global levels. A few of our favorites include:
Interested in volunteering with a local environmental org in honor of Earth Day? Look no further than Chattanooga Park Stewards and Green Steps.
Additionally, here are a few must-know facts about the history of Earth Day:
    • Senator Gaylord Nelson spearheaded the creation of Earth Day after witnessing an oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA. Under his leadership, the first Earth Day was in 1970.
    • The first Earth Day sparked an outpouring of environmental activism, and less than six months later, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the US Environmental Protection Agency were formed.
    • Earth Day went global in 1990.

Updated renderings of new Lookouts Stadium

The updated plans include a large stadium that can hold ~10,000 folks. | Rendering by New City Properties via The City of Chattanooga
Last summer, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly + former Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger announced a plan to revitalize the South Broad district.

Now, we have a development update on the new multi-use stadium + future home of the Chattanooga Lookouts.

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Sports Authority has released updated renderings on the plans for the new stadium — done in partnership with New City Properties and Perimeter Properties. Spanning 140 acres, the rebuild will redevelop, revitalize + incorporate historical buildings into the plans.

The executive summary states the Lookouts will pay at least $75 million to build + maintain the stadium over the course of a 30-year lease. The team’s rent will start at $1 million per year — one of the highest rents for a minor league baseball team.

The stadium is projected to open in 2025. Check out more information on the future of South Broad + funding data.
