Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday, May 14, and if you’re looking to celebrate the mother figure in your life — we have some ideas.

  • Mayor Tim Kelly has appointed Jermaine Freeman as his interim Chief of Staff, filling the role that was vacated by Joda Thongnopnua. Freeman previously served in senior leadership roles under Mayor Kelly + the prior mayoral administration. (Chattanoogan.com)

  • The results of the inaugural Community Culture Index have been released. The index was the region’s first highly-localized, data-driven assessment to see how well local employers have incorporated inclusive practices in the workplace. Read the findings.

  • Ready for some fun for the whole family? River City Co. will host its Family Fun Day on the Chattanooga Green on Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be free kite building and arts + crafts. Note: RSVP to help ensure there are plenty of supplies available.
Arts
  • Applications are now open for the 2023 Nightingale Network Grant. The grant offers $10,000 to local organizations impacting women + girls. Apply for the grant online before Thursday, June 22 at 5 p.m. Bonus: An informational session will be held on Wednesday, May 10.
Health
  • The Children’s Hospital at Erlanger recently received a new pediatric MRI machine — the region’s only dedicated MRI machine for pediatric patients. The machine is anticipated to be up and running by early June as the first phase of the new Children’s MRI and Outpatient Procedure Center.
Cause
  • Tickets are on sale now for the 2023 Faux Fur Fest hosted by Chattanooga’s Humane Educational Society. The event celebrates the life-saving work of the organization + the funds raised will be used for the comprehensive veterinary care provided at the shelters.

  • The Chattanooga Boys Choir will present its “Finale!” Spring Concert on Thursday, May 11. The free concert held will feature a variety of diverse + engaging programming based on the theme of hopes, dreams, and community.

Celebrate National Bike Month in Chattanooga, TN

Did you know that May is National Bike Month?

To celebrate, Outdoor Chattanooga — a division of the city’s parks + outdoors department — invites the public to participate in a series of bike-related programs all month long.

The programs aim to highlight the benefits of biking, encourage folks to try biking, and raise awareness about bike safety.

Here’s a little of what you can expect during the month:
  • Thursday, May 11 | Intro to Mountain Biking class | $10 | Learn the basics of mountain biking in a controlled environment — includes all gear.
  • Friday, May 12 | Mountain to Town Class | $25 | Ride a shuttle to the top of Lookout Mountain + enjoy a leisurely ride frown the Guild Trail and Tennessee River Park — includes all gear.
  • Friday, May 19 | National Bike to Work Day | Free+ | Join a city-wide community activation initiative to bike to work, support stations will be set up throughout town (locations TBA).
