History

Hamilton County School Board members recently voted unanimously to pursue the development of turning the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s Golden Gateway site into a school. The 11-acre site has a $10 million bid that was approved in the county’s budget. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

The Chattanooga Historic Zoning Commission approved a resolution designating part of the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences’ campus as a historical landmark. The resolution marks Wyatt Hall as one of “oldest surviving buildings in the Hamilton County school system.” (NewsChannel 9)

Bird Fork Farm, in nearby Dunlap, will have a Volunteer Day at its farm from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 29. Volunteers will help “weed, plant, and possibly harvest on the farm.” Sign up.
Music
The Chattanooga Market will host its Chattanooga Bluegrass event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 30 at the First Horizon Pavilion. The afternoon festivities will include performances from regional acts New Grass Express + Randy Steele.
Arts
In-Town Gallery will hold an opening reception for its new exhibition ”Creating Waves With Wax” on Friday, Aug. 4. The exhibit features encaustic paintings created by Margaret Park, who will lead a demonstration on the medium during the event. See the exhibit through Thursday, Aug. 31.
Festival
Tickets are running low for the Chattanooga Margarita Festival on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the First Horizon Pavilion. This 21+ event will showcase local bars and restaurants as they battle for the best margarita in town. Check out the competitors.

Family Fun Day to feature Children’s Entrepreneur Market

River City Co.’s annual Family Fun Day will return to the Chattanooga Green on Saturday, Aug. 12 featuring a special partnership with the Children’s Entrepreneur Market.
The free-to-attend event will still feature free kite building, art making, crafts, coloring, and music for families to enjoy. New this year, will be over 40 children from ages 5-16 who will be representing a wide variety of their own businesses.
The participants are enrolled in the Children’s Entrepreneur Market program, which “creates a safe, fun, and real-world environment for up-and-coming entrepreneurs to start and grow their own business.”
Community members are invited to support the budding business owners as they deliver sales pitches, conduct transactions + polish their customer service skills.
Bonus: Have a kiddo who has their own business idea? There are still a few spaces open for kid entrepreneurs to register for the event online.
Did you know that it’s Shark Week? I’ve grown up watching all the shark-filled programs on The Discovery Channel. To celebrate locally, I’m planning on checking out the screening of “Jaws” at The Walker Theatre on Friday, July 28. Tickets are $10-$12 as part of the Bobby Stone Film Series.
