Who knew there were so many talented photographers in Chattanooga? You all submitted 332 photos for our 2023 Picture of the Year contest and — we must admit — narrowing it down to just five finalists was tough. See the finalists below and then vote for your favorite.

Civic
  • Hamilton County residents are invited to a public town hall meeting today, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Sale Creek Middle/High School to discuss the proposed rezoning of McDonald Farm. Topics will include the effects development could have on the neighboring Cumberland Trail + Audubon Mountain natural areas.
Development
  • A mixed-use residential and commercial development is slated for the Riverfront Parkway area. The six-story building, proposed at the site of the former Vehicle Inspection Center, is projected to hold 40 apartments, with the first two floors dedicated to retail spaces + offices. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
Health
  • The Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga will team up with Blood Assurance for a mobile drive. On Sunday, Jan. 28, you can head to the center at 5461 N. Terrace Rd. to donate through the Bloodmobile bus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Outdoors
  • The Coolidge Park carousel will be closed now through Friday, Jan. 26 to allow the Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors Department to conduct maintenance checks. Kiddos will be able to enjoy the attraction again starting Saturday, Jan. 27.
Older Adult
  • A new Thrive Senior Living campus has been proposed in the Ooltewah area. The development is planned on the 81.5-acre parcel of land by Amos Road (near Ooltewah High School). Pending rezoning approval, the facility will welcome those 55+. (Chattanoogan.com)

  • In case you missed it, applications are now open for United Way of Greater Chattanooga’s grant cycle. Pre-applications are due Friday, Feb. 9 + the full application must be complete by Friday, March 1. Learn more about the grants and guidelines.

Ruby Falls debuts Skyline Lofts

Ruby Falls has debuted its newest addition, the Skyline Loft, as part of its year-long celebration of the landmark’s 95th anniversary.

The new event venue was designed to “reflect the rich history of Ruby Falls and highlight the natural beauty of Lookout Mountain.”

The 3,500-sqft space located on the top of the historic castle offers a modern take on the original rooftop garden. Folks who are interested in renting the space can customize the venue to best fit the interests of their event. Some of the amenities include:
  • A catering kitchen
  • A complete audio + visual system
  • Tables + chairs
  • Free parking for guests
  • Ability to choose from preferred vendors or select your own
Skyline Loft is currently accepting bookings for 2024 + 2025. If you want to check out the space for yourself, reserve your spot to attend an open house on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

I’m excited to share a brunch recommendation with you all. I finally made it to Elsie’s Daughter to try out the new brunch offerings, and everything was absolutely delicious. For a savory option, you have to try the chilaquiles + if you like something on the sweeter side, the French toast was divine.
