Dunlap is located in the heart of the Sequatchie Valley, which connects Chattanooga to Tennessee’s South Cumberland Plateau. | Photo by NOOGAtoday
Hey there readers, Editor Kristen here. My parents recently moved to nearby Dunlap, and I’ve been having a great time exploring this town nestled in the Sequatchie Valley with them.
Dunlap is only ~45 minutes from Chattanooga, making it a great option for a day trip filled with scenic views and fun activities. Here are some of my suggestions to check out if you plan on visiting.
Take a hike to see this beautiful waterfall.

🌄 Take in the views
If you take Highway 111, you have to stop by the Sequatchie Valley Overlook on the Scenic Byway. There are plenty of spots for you to park your car and pause to see the sights. Bonus: You’ll often catch hang gliders swooping through the valley.
Head up to Savage Gulf State Park for some beautiful hikes. There’s a hike on the shorter side (2.9 miles) to see Savage Falls with several spots to take a dip in the water if you need to cool off.
🌻 Activities to try
If you visit on a Saturday, head to Harris Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST for the Dunlap Farmers Market. You can shop from local vendors and enjoy live music. Bonus: Bring the kiddos to the park to enjoy the splash pad.
You may recognize Bird Fork Farm from the Main Street Farmers Market + other pop-ups around town. They host a ton of workshops at their farm, like canning and herbal tinctures.
Sequatchie Valley Brewing Co. is the first brewery to open in Dunlap + is family-owned. Swing by for brews and eats, I loved the “Left Arm Tan” blonde ale.
I’m still a newbie when it comes to this town, so if you have any recommendations for where I should take my parents next, send them my way.

It’s time to dust off those Halloween costumes. The annual “Summerween” celebration will return to Patten Square on Saturday, June 29.
Brought to you by River City. Co + SoundCorps, this free and open-to-public event celebrates all the things you love about Halloween in the summertime (hence, the clever name).
Beginning at 6 p.m., you can enjoy live music by local bands Haym and Genki Genki Panic + see street performers like fire dancers in the square. Food trucks will be on-site with pizza, cool treats, and drinks — and of course, there will be trick or treating.
Our favorite part? The contests:
7 p.m. | Watermelon carving contest (make sure to arrive with your pre-carved watermelon)
7:45 p.m. | Kids costume contest
9:30 p.m. | Adult costume contest
May the best costumes + watermelons win — there’s bragging rights and $50 gift cards on the line.
