Meet Autio: A collection of location-based stories perfect for your road trip
Taking a road trip to Memphis? Listen to a story about the Mississippi River Museum or Beale Street Blues while driving. | Photo via @nature.travel.landscape.photos
Boy, do we have a story for you — 11,000+ of them, actually — all conveniently located within one app that can serve as your new travel buddy. And just like your favorite local newsletter, each story comes in at ~five minutes + will leave you more informed about the cities you travel through.
Meet Autio, a location-based storytelling app. Let’s say you were taking a road trip along the Appalachian Mountains. With Autio, you could listen to Academy Award-winning actor (and Autio co-founder) Kevin Costner’s “Civil War Gramps” while driving through Somerset, KY, and later hear about the giants that once roamed West Virginia while traveling in the state.
How it works
Boot up the app, connect to Bluetooth, and hit the road. If you allow the app to know your location, it will automatically play stories based on where you are.
Take a look at five episodes you might hear when road-tripping from Chattanooga. (P.S., five is the number of free stories you get when you make an account, so you can decide if an Autio subscription is for you.)

Local theater company Obvious Dad isn’t playing around with its latest business move — a merger that brings performing arts program Southern Exposure to center stage.
Going forward, the program will be the official community outreach initiative for the company, expanding the shared mission of creating an inclusive and diverse space to highlight marginalized voices.
“At Obvious Dad, our goal has always been to amplify diverse perspectives, and Southern Exposure aligns perfectly with this vision, focusing on the powerful stories rooted in our own community,” said Founding Artistic Director of Obvious Dad Blake Harris. “Together, we’re set to make a lasting impact through theater.”
If you’re not familiar with Southern Exposure, it was founded by “one of Appalachia’s most respected and prolific artists,” Peggy Douglas. Focusing on the power of oral history, the outreach program offers storytelling through theatrical series + brings its ethical oral history methodology to local classrooms.
Keep an eye out for upcoming works to join the conversations.
