Do we call any of our bridges by their official names? | Photo by NOOGAtoday
Are you guilty of calling Olgiati Bridge “Ol’ Johnny”? Or even “Ol’ Jottie”? You’re not alone.
Across the US, communities have created their own nicknames that might confuse out-of-towners asking for directions. Chicago’s Willis Tower is still referenced by locals as the “Sears Tower,” NYC’s Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is lovingly shortened to “the BQE,” and closer to home, Greenvillians in SC call Augusta Street “Augusta Road.”
We’re curious to know what Chattanoogans really call things — even if it’s just among friends or family. We’ll go first:
Do you call it the John Ross Bridge or the Market Street Bridge?
Do you call it the Soldiers and Sailors Auditorium? Memorial Auditorium?
Do you call it Chatt? Chatty? Be honest with us, does anyone call it Nooga?
