Last summer, we broke down the plans for the upcoming $3 million renovation to the Chattanooga Skate Park + one question remained: Where will folks be allowed to skate when the park is closed for construction?

Currently, the City of Chattanooga’s ordinance prohibits “skateboards and aggressive skates” on downtown streets and sidewalks.

Enter: Nick Moore, owner of Cassette Skate Shop in St. Elmo, and his plans for Pocket Plaza.

Moore, who has grown up in Chattanooga + got introduced in the local skating scene in 1996, said he got more involved when Brent Sanders — organizer behind the grassroots Chattanooga Skate Park Project — passed the torch to him after the movement disbanded.

He since has been working as the liaison between the community and the city to create the area’s first legal DIY skatepark at 3937 St. Elmo Ave.

Once built, Pocket Plaza will be open for at least a year through a lease drafted between the city + CARTA (who owns that lot). Moore will then have the opportunity to apply for another year (in six-month increments).

You’ve heard of beating the summer heat, but what about the traffic? Thanks to Thrive Regional Partnership + the Tennessee Infrastructure Alliance, here are four scenic routes to try:

US Hwy 321 + TN State Route 320 | Avoids I-24/I-75 congestion
Use if traveling from South Chattanooga to the Manchester area — perfect for your Bonnaroo travel plans + goes through areas like Soddy-Daisy.

TN State Route 58 | Avoids I-75 congestion (along Chickamauga Lake + Tennessee River)
Connects downtown and leads to Harrison, continuing through Decatur to I-40 at Kingston.

TN State Route 318 to US Highway 11 | Avoids Moccasin Bend + Hwy 27/I-24 interchange
Use when driving from the St. Elmo and Lookout Mountain area towards Wildwood, GA (or near Trenton, GA).

TN State Route 153 N to TN State Route 11 | Avoids I-75 / I-24 split, Missionary Ridge + Moccasin Bend
Avoid the interstate entirely from the Brainerd and Soddy-Daisy areas through Dunlap and north to Cookeville.

The Wrap

As a longtime “Hunger Games” fan, I’ve been following the casting announcements for the upcoming film adaptation of “Sunrise on the Reaping” pretty closely — chef’s kisses to the casting directors for not missing the mark. They’ve even opened up a casting call for one lucky fan to join. Learn how to volunteer as tribute.
