The Chattanooga Margarita Festival will be shaking things up on Saturday, Aug. 9. From 6 to 9 p.m. at the First Horizon Pavilion, you’ll have the chance to taste-test some of the best margaritas Chattanooga has to offer.
A $54 general admission ticket will get you 10 sample-size margaritas from Chattanooga restaurants. But if you’re really a connoisseur, you might want to spring for a $95 VIP ticket. It includes early admission to the festival, some light snacks, and most importantly — two extra margarita samples.
Pro tip: Before you waste away, be sure to vote for your favorite margarita. A winner will be announced at the end of the night.

Collegedale Commissioners approved a rezoning request that’ll allow the development of 102 single-family homes on a 32-acre property at 10419 Lee Hwy. To lower the impact on residents, the developer agreed to decrease the number of homes and create a 50 ft buffer between the development + the neighboring community. (Chattanoogan)

The Hamilton County Health Department is hosting its free back-to-school open house today. From 4 to 7 p.m., families can visit the department to get pediatric vaccines, free backpacks filled with school supplies + free food and snow cones. (Local 3 News)

Chattanooga will open a second Heart Hub tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Glenwood Community Center, expanding the community’s access to cardiovascular resources. You can stop by during office hours for basic health monitoring, including an automated blood pressure machine available for anyone to use.
Civic
The Chattanooga City Council passed a backyard hen ordinance on the first reading this week. If it passes a final vote on Tuesday, July 29, the ordinance will allow Chattanoogans to have up to eight hens inside a fenced area in their backyards. (News Channel 9)

A UTC math professor was awarded a ~$250,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The funding will support Dr. Xiunan Wang’s research on forecasting flu outbreaks. Dr. Wang uses a combination of math, AI, and environmental data to improve forecasting and early warning systems.
State
Hamilton County could soon lose its status as the fourth most populous county in Tennessee. Rutherford County, which includes Murfreesboro, currently has ~10,000 fewer residents, but is projected to take the number four spot by 2030 or sooner. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)
