Stop throwing out your old denim. Recycle it through Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program instead.

It’s simple: Find a participating retailer near you, drop off your well-loved denim (for free), and become a part of this green initiative.

How will your jeans be recycled? Blue Jeans Go Green™ will transform them into insulation for houses, pet beds, food packaging, and more.

Development

Big news for affordable housing in the Scenic City — the Chattanooga Land Bank Authority broke ground on its first home yesterday at 4520 Oakland Ave in Alton Park. The $200,000, two-bedroom home marks the start of more affordable housing projects to come. (The Pulse)

History

November is Native American Heritage Month. If you didn’t already know, Chattanooga’s name comes from a Creek word meaning “rock rising to a point.” The Passage memorial, a waterfall staircase near Ross’s Landing, honors the Cherokee people’s forced removal and marks their embarkation on the Trail of Tears.

Outdoors

Tennessee State Parks announced its annual Day After Thanksgiving Hikes, and two of them are in or near Chattanooga. Check out the guided hikes at Booker T. Washington State Park and Red Clay State Historic Park. Pro tip: Don’t wait to register — these tend to fill up quickly.

Seasonal

Picture this: drink in hand, butterflies landing on your shoulder, and penguins waddling around. This isn’t a fever dream — it’s Holiday Cheers at the Tennessee Aquarium, and it’s coming up next Friday, Nov. 21. Did I mention there will also be a mashed potato bar? Tickets are on sale now.

Legacy

Back and better than ever. The historic Fireman’s Fountain has returned to the Hamilton County Courthouse after months of restoration. The memorial honors firefighters William Peak and Henry Iler, who lost their lives battling a fire in 1886. (Local 3 News)
It’s the end of an era — the United States Mint recently pressed its final penny in Philadelphia. Did you know? In early 20th-century Chattanooga, Brock Candy Company (formerly Trigg Candy Company) sold pieces of candy for just a penny each. (Associated Press)

The Wrap

In yesterday’s newsletter, we mentioned Gratefull, Chattanooga’s free community luncheon happening Thursday, Nov. 20. But kindness doesn’t stop there — seven other spots are serving free Thanksgiving meals to anyone who needs one, no questions asked.
