News Notes

Today Is

Martin Luther King Jr. Day. You can honor his life + legacy by attending the MLK Day Parade. And in case you missed it in our Events section, the Bessie Smith Cultural Center and Hunter Museum of American Art will have free admission today.

Weather

One of today’s service projects — the MLK Day Cleanup in Red Bank — has been postponed due to cold weather. It will now be on Sunday, Feb. 8 from 12 to 2:30 p.m. If you’re volunteering outdoors for other projects today, be sure to bundle up.

Traffic

Road closures for today’s MLK Day Parade will begin at 12 p.m. and last until around 3 p.m. Expect closures on Georgia Avenue, E. MLK Boulevard, and Peeples Street. Drivers can use E. 10th Street or McCallie Avenue as detours. (Chattanoogan)

Mansion Monday

Tall isn’t normally a word we’d use to describe a home… until now. This 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom North Chattanooga home will make you feel like you’re in a luxury tree house. It has lots of windows and a tucked away feel, while still being a short walk from North Shore.

Biz

Rock City’s plan to build a gondola system up Lookout Mountain is inching forward after the Walker County Planning Commission approved its rezoning request. The proposal still needs approval from the full Board of Commissioners, with a vote expected Friday, Feb. 5. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

Listen

When bad weather is in the forecast, how does Hamilton County decide whether to cancel school? A new episode of the “Let’s Talk HCS” podcast pulls back the curtain with help from district leaders, a local meteorologist, emergency management personnel, and transportation staff.
