First-hand look at our favorite bridge
More than half of the Walnut Street Bridge now has smooth, new decking. | Photo by NOOGAtoday
Just like many of you, I can’t wait for Chattanooga’s Walnut Street Bridge to reopen to pedestrians. Last week, I got to tour the beloved landmark and get an up-close look at the new decking, paint, and lighting.
My observations
The new decking is smooth and sturdy. It’s made of Alaskan yellow cedar wood, which is durable, decay-resistant, and expected to last 30+ years.
The signature blue paint on the trusses + white paint on the railings really complement each other.
The LED lights are new and energy efficient — but they look old school to honor the bridge’s long history.
Need-to-knows
Eleven high-definition cameras are being added for extra safety.
Netting is being installed to deter birds from creating nests in the bridge.
About 60% of the decking has been installed, from Northshore to Span 5.
The bridge is on track to reopen in September, and there will be several events commemorating the occasion. Stay tuned.
Not sure if you noticed at the top of this newsletter, but the sun will be setting after 8 p.m. for the first time in six months. Maybe I’m way too excited about this, but if you need me, I’ll be celebrating at one of Chattanooga’s beautiful parks.
