Hey there, old friend

Get excited, because the Walnut Street Bridge is starting to look like, well, the Walnut Street Bridge again.

Crews have finished painting the iconic blue pedestrian bridge, and the tarps have come down. Now, the focus turns to the final stages of the 18-month renovation project.

What’s left

  • 1,166 ft of wood decking still needs to be laid. For context, that’s about half of the bridge.
  • New LED light poles and electrical wiring need to be installed.
  • Crews need to do some minor touch-up painting.
Four workers in safety gear and neon vests secure tarps on a blue metal structure, conveying teamwork and focus. The background is a hazy sky.

The tarps were in place for containment during painting and sandblasting.

What’s done

  • Large-scale sandblasting and painting is complete.
  • 1,203 ft of wood decking has been installed.
  • Steel repairs are nearly complete.

The best news? The project is still on schedule, and the bridge is expected to reopen in late September. For now, with the tarps down, we’ll just have to admire it from afar.

March Madness starts next week, and although the brackets won’t be revealed until Sunday, it’s time to start planning where you’ll watch college basketball’s biggest tournaments.

Chattanooga has no shortage of sports bars, but if you’d rather post up during the workday, we’ve picked a few of our favorites with free Wi-Fi.
  • Bud’s Sports Bar | 5751 Brainerd Rd. | Bud’s has been around for more than 40 years and has 70+ TVs, plus cheap beer and wings.
  • Mike’s Hole in the Wall | 535 Cherokee Blvd. | Admittedly, we got sidetracked by the mouthwatering photos on this Northshore favorite’s menu (hello, mini corn dogs), but it also has free Wi-Fi and plenty of TVs for games.
  • HiFi Clyde’s Chattanooga | 122 W. Main St. | This Southside spot has lots of TVs, an outdoor patio, and a great atmosphere for big groups.

The Wrap

What’s that sound? Hummingbirds are returning to Chattanooga, including the red-throated hummingbird. The migratory species is expected to pass through our area April 1-15 as they venture north for the warmer months. See if you can spot them at a local birdwatching spot.
