News Notes

Holiday

Passover begins at sundown today and lasts for eight days. The Jewish festival celebrates the Israelites’ escape from Egyptian slavery more than 3,000 years ago. While it’s a requirement to eat matzah (unleavened bread) during Passover, you can order kosher takeout year-round in Chattanooga.

Plan Ahead

Get your costumes ready. The first-ever Chattanooga Renaissance Faire, presented by Verre Noir, is happening at Coolidge Park on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Expect medieval fun, music, food, and festivities. Follow the event’s Instagram page for updates as the day approaches.

History

A ~$1 million grant from the National Park Service, combined with local funds, will help preserve 31 acres along the Tennessee River tied to the Civil War’s Battle of Wauhatchie. The purchase will ensure the site remains protected for historical and educational purposes. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

Civic

Know a veteran who should be honored with a flag on Veterans Bridge? If you didn’t know, new flags are raised twice a year — on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Applications are now open and must be submitted at least two weeks before each holiday. (WDEF)

Try This

Who says you can’t have fun as an adult? Collegedale is hosting an 18+ Nerf Wars event next Friday, April 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It’s free to play, but registration is required. So grab your kid’s Nerf gun, some eye protection, and get ready for some fun. (Local 3 News)

State

A new Tennessee law designates April as Native Plant Month. “I hope this legislation raises conservation awareness [and] supports local agriculture and horticulture industries,” said State Rep. Greg Vital. We hope so, too. Shop Reflection Riding’s Native Plant Nursery Thursday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Local 3 News)

The fifth annual Hello, St. Elmo! Street Festival is next Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Not surprisingly, the corgi parade at 1 p.m. is a highlight.

The festival also celebrates small businesses and the community with live music, a makers market, and food vendors.

The Buy

A trendy square-cut tank under $15 that’s a great wardrobe basic for spring and summer. It’s double-lined, soft, and has the right amount of stretch to flatter curves. Stock up in black, white, or both.

The Wrap

We hope you know your way around downtown, because all of the street signs are about to be replaced with emojis.

April Fools. That’s definitely not happening, but consider this your reminder to scroll with caution and keep an eye out for pranks on social media today. We love this one from last year, when East Ridge claimed I-75 was being converted into a lazy river. Sounds kinda nice, doesn’t it?
