Give blood, get free testing

Blood supplies are running low, and Chattanooga donors are being offered some pretty compelling reasons to help out.

Blood Assurance

Starting Friday, May 1, donors who give blood at Blood Assurance’s downtown location (705 E. 4th St.) can get free comprehensive lab testing through Goodlabs.

The testing includes common panels like metabolic, lipid, hormone, and kidney function — services that typically cost up to $500 out of pocket. Results come with easy-to-understand explanations, giving donors a snapshot of their overall health.

If you’re interested, book an appointment online. After you donate, you’ll get a text when your results are ready, and you’ll be able to see them on the Goodlabs website.

The goal: boost the local blood supply while giving donors some preventative health insights. Not a bad trade-off. Blood Assurance says the most-needed blood types right now are O-positive, O-negative, and B-negative.

April showers bring May flowers, but May flowers bring... allergies.

Here are some tips to avoid letting sneezin’ season keep you inside:

  • Start allergy meds two weeks before your symptoms begin
  • Track the daily pollen count and plan outdoor activities for lower-count days
  • Keep pollen outside by changing clothes and showering after being outdoors

Need expert relief? Physicians Care Walk-in Clinic is open seven days a week. Just walk in, use Hold My Spot®, or schedule a virtual visit.

Civic

Starting May 4, all of Chattanooga’s recycling and refuse centers will be closed on Mondays. The city says the extra day will allow crews to handle maintenance and make improvements to better serve residents. (News Channel 9)

Traffic

There are lots of road closures that could impact your ability to get around town over the next several days. Give them a quick look before you head out the door. (WDEF)

Number

$5 million. That’s how much the Chattanooga Zoo is set to receive in state funding to build a new veterinary hospital and relocate its education center. Plans call for demolishing the current education space to make way for the hospital and moving the education center to another location. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

The Wrap

Inhale. Exhale. April is Stress Awareness Month — aka your sign to slow down a bit. With perfect weather today and tomorrow (aside from the pollen), we suggest you take a walk along the Tennessee Riverwalk or do a lap around your favorite local park to reduce stress while boosting mental and physical health.
