Celebrate International Dark Sky Week

Saturday, April 15 kicks off International Dark Sky Week, an initiative to combat light pollution in cities all over the world. Do you want to see stars over our city — even downtown? Follow these recommendations from the International Dark Sky Association.

Help measure night sky brightness as a “citizen-scientist” with Globe at Night.

Inventory your home lighting by following the IDA checklist — it could be as easy as pointing an upward-facing light towards the ground.

Join the IDSW scavenger hunt. You’ll start by downloading the free hunt card. Record your progress, send the completed card to IDA, and claim some free Dark Sky stickers.

Contact a local government representative and request an official proclamation of IDSW. Awareness matters: Locals like you initiated 23 successful proclamations nationwide in 2022.

Write a letter to the editor of your (second) favorite newsletter, paper, or magazine. No debate skills necessary — just follow the playbook and make a case for dark skies.

Become a Dark Sky Advocate. Want more star parties, dark city walks, and collaboration with local organizations? Help protect the night as a local point of contact for IDA.

Find local stargazing events. Consider supporting the Barnard Astronomical Society of Chattanooga and Tennessee State Parks. Or, plan a trip to your nearest Dark Site and tag us on Instagram (@NOOGAtoday) with your view of the night sky. Bonus: The Lyrid meteor shower peaks are from Wednesday, April 19-Saturday, April 22.

What questions do you have about HIV and HIV prevention?

Did you know? HIV is more prevalent in the South — accounting for 52% of new HIV diagnoses — than in any other region in the US. HIV impacts:
  • 1.2 million people in the US
  • 17,667 people in Tennessee
  • 328 of every 100,000 people in Hamilton County
Another stat to consider: 1 in 7 people with HIV are unaware of their status.

While there is currently no effective cure for HIV, with proper medical care, the virus can be controlled (read: virus-suppressing medication can make HIV undetectable + untransmittable through sex). That’s why a core service in Cempa Community Care’s mission to champion healthy communities is providing HIV prevention and testing services (including free At-Home HIV Testing Kits).

This is where you come in. In an effort to best serve the community, Cempa Community Care wants to know: What questions do you have about HIV or HIV prevention?

Submit your questions and we’ll share the health experts’ answers in a coming newsletter.*
