August marks National Black Business Month, and while we spotlight these locally-owned businesses all year long, we wanted to create a helpful guide on some spots to check out for your next day out on the town.

Shops

Eros Hat Co., 45 E. Main St. | This woman-owned spot offers customized hats, permanent jewelry + vintage denim — check out various community events the store puts on.

Allgood’s Used Books & Coffee, 2420 Glass St. | Spend an afternoon sipping on coffee while perusing pre-loved books at this small shop.

Mooshi Mugs, Online | Brought to you by local artist Genesis the Greykid, these handmade tea and coffee mugs will bring art to you every morning — bonus: Shop items through Six and Main.

Development
  • The Tivoli Foundation is set to close on its financing package for renovations + the construction of its performing arts center this fall. Construction is slated to begin in December with an anticipated opening in the spring of 2025. (Chattanoogan.com)
Closing
  • After over a century of operation, the owner of Zarzour’s Café Joe Fuller announced in a Facebook post that he will sell the restaurant property. Zarzour’s has been a beloved spot at 1627 Rossville Ave. for 106 years.
Arts
  • ArtsBuild has released the four recipients of the 2023 Ruth Holmberg Arts Leadership Award. Dr. Roland Carter, Vincent Oakes, Peggy Wood Townsend, and Stan Townsend have been recognized for their significant contributions to the arts in Chattanooga. (The Pulse)
Announced
  • The Chattanooga Tourism Co. has announced that Paul Ouimet, the president of MMGY NextFactor + managing director of DestinationNext, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Chattanooga Tourism Summit. Get your tickets to the summit held on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Biz
  • The Gear Closet, a used outdoor gear shop, has moved from its location at 1510 Riverside Dr. to 305 Signal Mountain Rd. Make sure to keep up with the shop’s Instagram page for updates on hours of operation.
Correction
  • In yesterday’s newsletter we shared the Black Jacket Symphony event at the Memorial Auditorium. We mistakenly wrote the date of the event was Friday, Aug. 18, the performance will actually take place on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m.
