Redeveloping the Riverview Park playground, bringing inclusivity

Local nonprofit Hope Included has embarked on a redevelopment project of Riverview Park, located off of Barton Avenue + Riverview Road, with hopes of bringing inclusivity.

With the help of the Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors Department and Play & Park Structures Inc., the area will be transformed to create a recreational space for children of differing abilities, ages, and communities.

The vision

The park will be recognized as part of Play & Park’s National Demonstration Site Program, with the design following key principles and practices of the program.

You can expect an incorporation of nature with a “vine tunnel,” allowing for exploration, as you enter the park. There will also be areas that are intentionally designed to help integrate play time among all children.

Think: Cozy areas where kiddos can sit back and observe before participating by using several “Jump in Points,” activities for children ages six months to 12 years + curated sensory music with the use of Freenotes Harmony Park decor that will play soothing sounds.

The park will also feature playground equipment that will be accessible for all abilities.

Think: All slides will have open bedways to allow for supervision + the surfacing will be poured in place, making for easy travel around the grounds.

The equipment will accommodate mobility devices and access to activities will suite those of all abilities.

Funding

The $1 million redevelopment will be funded in various ways. As part of the program, Play & Park is providing a matching funds grant for all equipment. Additionally, the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities recently awarded the project a $500,000 inclusive playground and facility grant.

Hope Included will continue to raise ~$10,000 more through community support to help bring a walking path, fully accessible family bathrooms, artwork, and an updated pavilion to the park.

The park has a projected completion during the summer of 2024.

“We recognized the limitations of the park for children with disabilities and envisioned a more inclusive place to support the needs of all children.” — Hope Included Founder, Nicolle McCoy
