The Unity Group of Chattanooga has announced the schedule of events for its 54th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Week with the theme of “Love for Humanity and Justice.”
The local community organization will host presentations, a parade, a breakfast, and more to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from tomorrow, Jan. 6 to Monday, Jan. 15. Here are a few of the events to check out + you can view the full lineup online.
MLK Book Drive | Saturday, Jan. 6
Head over to The Book & Cover located at 1310 Hanover St. beginning at 10:30 a.m. to donate or purchase books to be distributed to local area children.
Annual Prayer Breakfast | Saturday, Jan. 13
Community members will gather at Tucker Baptist Church at 9 a.m. for breakfast and to hear from keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Rodney Todd Morton. Get your tickets.
Gospel Music Extravaganza | Sunday, Jan. 14
Folks can gather at Bethel AME Church (2000 Walker St.) at 4 p.m. to hear an arrangement of gospel music performances by various musicians.
54th Annual Memorial March and Parade | Monday, Jan. 15
Join the community for the annual downtown parade. The lineup for the parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Georgia Avenue (along Miller Park) + will end at Peeples Street.
Main Program | Monday, Jan. 15
The final event of the week will take place at Olivet Baptist Church (740 E. MLK Blvd.) at 2 p.m. Folks will hear from keynote speaker Pastor Breonus M. Mitchell, Sr.

Neighborhood Services will launch its Neighborhood Leaders Alliance initiative on Tuesday, Jan. 23. This three-month problem-solving cohort will focus on “developing a shared understanding of our city.” Leaders of local Neighborhood Associations can RSVP online.
UTC
UTC recently received accreditation for its Mocs Recovery Program, which provides students in recovery or treatment for substance misuse with support during their education. The university is one of the first 10 in the US to reach this status for this type of program. (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga)

Due to illness, Sleepyhead Coffee will postpone its Dry January Dinner with Mac’s Kitchen and Bar to Friday, Jan. 19. Tickets can be purchased for the new date + current ticketholders can receive a refund if there are scheduling conflicts.

Applications are open to join the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center’s Teacher Fellowship. This year-long program is open to educators from Tennessee, Georgia + select counties in Alabama. Apply by Monday, Jan. 15.

Mad Priest Coffee Roasters will welcome Chef Wellington Onyenwe of ShamisoFoods on Friday, Jan. 12 at The Daily Ration for an evening about “The Story of Coffee.” Attendees will be able to taste a three-course meal featuring coffee notes from regions where the roastery sources its beans.

In honor of its 25th anniversary, the Chattanooga Pipe Band will perform a special show on Saturday, Jan. 27. This event is free and open to the public at Chattanooga Brewing Co. from 8:30 to 11 p.m. (Chattanoogan.com)

🎨 Wrapping up the 10th Street murals project
EPB opens call for artists to complete 10th Street murals

Over the last three years, EPB has worked to beautify its substation walls along 10th Street with murals painted by local area artists. Now, EPB has opened its call for artists to complete the final installation.
This year’s theme is “The Magic of Unity” — illustrating the “possibilities of change when we work together.” The murals will be painted on the side parallel to Douglas Heights + will feature 9-11 sections.

Need-to-know information
Artists must be 18+ and live in the EPB service area.
Artists will be asked to submit at least five images of their art, a vision statement + a sketch of their concept that aligns with the theme.
Artists will be awarded a supply budget + service fee for their work.
