We’re not in Chattanooga anymore, readers, because we’re flying up, up, and away to nearby Townsend for the annual Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 17.

This family-friendly event features vendors, a beer garden, and professional balloonists offering a chance to see the views of the mountains from inside hot air balloons + ends with a lighting of the balloons in the sky.

In case you might not already be sold on the ~two-hour drive to see + take a tethered ride on these larger-than-life balloons — we’re giving you some ideas of how to make the most of your trip.

🚗 For the daytrippers

  • 11 a.m. | Hit the road with NOOGAtoday’s playlist as your scenic soundtrack (which just so happens to be the length of the drive).
  • 1 p.m. | Grab a bite before the festival — Little River Pub and Deli serves up craft sandwiches on its scenic patio.
  • 4-9 p.m. | Purchase your ride times online beforehand + pack a chair or blanket, bring your leashed furry friends, and enjoy the show. Bonus: Since you’re only there for the day — check out the perks of being a VIP.

🛶 Behind the Scenes at Reflection Riding

🛶 Try This: Behind the Scenes at Reflection Riding

Presented by a NOOGAtoday Partner
NOOGAtoday | Reflection Riding
Take a relaxing, guided canoe trip down Lookout Creek. | Photo by NOOGAtoday
Howdy readers, City Editor Kristen here.

Nooga’s own Reflection Riding recently began offering customizable, fully guided Behind the Scenes Experiences of their 300-acre campus — and we were some of the first to dive in.

These immersive adventures offer groups of up to 20 the opportunity to interact with the animals + environments of Reflection Riding in a whole new way by choosing three experiences from a list that includes:
  • Animal encounters
  • Wildlife area tours
  • A canoe trip
  • An exploration backpack
  • And more

What we tried:

We geared up for a guided canoe trip, an animal encounter (we couldn’t pass up saying hi to Winnie, the barn owl), and the wildlife area tour.

I particularly loved taking in all the scenic views during the trip down Lookout Creek. The creek is peaceful yet booming with life — I saw countless turtles, alligators, and herons on my voyage.

It’s a great opportunity to relax while learning about the creek’s aquatic life with one of Reflection Riding’s expert naturalists.

Keep reading to hear about our close encounters with the winged kind, or start building your own Behind the Scenes Experience.

🧴 Reduce, reuse, refill

Reducing plastic waste with Frequency Fillery

Shelves showing shampoos, lotions, and soaps in large containers at a refill station
Why buy new when you can just pay for the refill? | Photo by NOOGAtoday
Tired of bulky plastic bottles taking up your trash + our city landfills? So is Mackenzie Tapley — owner of Frequency Fillery, a startup offering plastic-free everyday essentials in upcycled packaging.

Tapley said she has been keeping up with the Refillery Collective movement while also being involved locally with green|spaces + the city’s Climate Action Plan committee, leading her to address Tennessee’s plastic waste policies.

“It doesn’t have to be expensive to shop sustainably,” Tapley said. “Having access to the products that are plastic-free gives you the choice to make a more sustainable decision.”

How it works

  • Head to the refill station at Burlaep Print & Press
  • Bring your own container or snag one of the upcycled packages available for free + for purchase
  • Use the scale to tare the weight of the container
  • Pick your product — shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sunscreen + bug spray
  • Fill, weigh + pay based on quantity
