We’re not in Chattanooga anymore, readers, because we’re flying up, up, and away to nearby Townsend for the annual Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 17.

This family-friendly event features vendors, a beer garden, and professional balloonists offering a chance to see the views of the mountains from inside hot air balloons + ends with a lighting of the balloons in the sky.

In case you might not already be sold on the ~two-hour drive to see + take a tethered ride on these larger-than-life balloons — we’re giving you some ideas of how to make the most of your trip.

For the daytrippers

  • 11 a.m. | Hit the road with NOOGAtoday’s playlist as your scenic soundtrack (which just so happens to be the length of the drive).
  • 1 p.m. | Grab a bite before the festival — Little River Pub and Deli serves up craft sandwiches on its scenic patio.
  • 4-9 p.m. | Purchase your ride times online beforehand + pack a chair or blanket, bring your leashed furry friends, and enjoy the show. Bonus: Since you’re only there for the day — check out the perks of being a VIP.
