James Baldwin Festival of Words schedule announced

The Chattanooga Festival of Black Arts & Ideas will host the third annual James Baldwin Festival of Words from Friday, Aug. 23 to Sunday, Aug. 25.

Named after the legendary novelist, essayist, playwright, and activist James Baldwin, this year’s festival will also honor his 100th birthday. The events are intended to showcase emerging + established local Black artists who are “creating, innovating, and producing extraordinary work in the literary arts.”

The festival will have a full weekend of events to engage, entertain, and educate readers, writers, and supporters of the arts. Note: Some events are free to attend, but donations are appreciated.

Friday, Aug. 23

Sip, Paint & Spit
Beginning at 6:30 p.m., enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, paint a mask, and listen to or share poetry. Bonus: The drinks will be provided by local Black-owned winery, Lady Naps Winery.

Saturday, Aug. 24

Literary Lounge
Head to the fourth floor of the Chattanooga Public Library’s downtown branch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to shop a market featuring local writers. Make sure to stick around for food, activities, and giveaways throughout the event.

Writing Workshops and Information Sessions
Speaking of the library, you can also head down to the first-floor auditorium at 10 a.m. to connect with other local writers and gain insights on how to take your work to the next level.

Open Scribez
Doors will open at 6 p.m. at Songbirds for this unique open mic experience specializing in vocals and lyrics.

Sunday, Aug. 25

Shades of Poetry
An artist talk led by Erika Roberts will begin at 3 p.m. at Rise Chattanooga, followed by a musical showcase at 6 p.m. that will pay homage to James Baldwin. Note: The artist talk is free to attend + tickets to the showcase are $25.

Civic
  • Have a question for Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly? Sign up to attend an open office hours event on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Avondale Community Center. You can make an appointment between 1 and 4:30 p.m. to speak with Mayor Kelly and a member of his staff.

  • The public is invited to join the city’s Neighborhood Services and the Regional Planning Agency for a roundtable discussion on Monday, Aug. 26. Representatives will meet at the City Council building to discuss the recently passed zoning code update + the Plan Chattanooga initiative. RSVP to attend.

  • The Hamilton County Health Department’s Step ONE program is now accepting applications for its Teaching Garden Grant. The program focuses on educating children and their families about nutrition by using gardens as outdoor classrooms. Apply by Friday, Sept. 20.

  • The Chattanooga Lookouts have announced their 2025 schedule. The team’s first home game will be on Tuesday, April 8 against the Birmingham Barons. Bonus: This season will feature 69 home games.

  • Chattanooga’s Crown Subaru dealership will team up with local nonprofit Jessie’s Desk to collect school supplies for elementary school students on Saturday, Aug. 17. Donations like backpacks, binders, paper, etc. can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its 7770 Lee Hwy. location.

  • The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera has appointed Ilya Ram as its new music director, concluding a two-year search. Ram previously served as the music director of the Akademische Philharmonie Heidelberg in Germany.

  • The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga + its President and CEO Candy Johnson were recently awarded the John W. Mack Medal of Honor at the National Urban League Conference. Get ready to focus on “the artistry of brewing hand-crafted beers” during the annual Rail & Hops Brewers Festival on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Folks can gather at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Gardens (where the festival originated) from 12 to 4 p.m. for a curated tasting experience. Bonus: Proceeds will benefit the local nonprofit City of Creators and its mission of sharing and growing the creative economy.
