Parking in downtown Chattanooga may soon become easier and less costly. Chattanooga Parking Authority + the City of Chattanooga are launching a three-month parking credit pilot program that will offer parking benefits valued up to $24.

Locals can apply for the program starting today at 9 a.m. through Friday, July 25 at 6 p.m. It’s open to all residents who hold a valid city sticker.

Credit usage will begin Friday, Aug. 1 and last through the end of October. Once enrolled, participants will be able to choose one of four parking options at downtown lots and garages. Codes to redeem the credits will be sent through email.

The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority hopes this initiative will help remove barriers to access downtown spaces. The program aims to enrich the area’s economy by encouraging more foot traffic to restaurants, stores, and businesses.

News Notes

Civic

Four Hamilton County towns received grants to help revitalize public parks through a program that awards up to $250,000 per municipality — matched by the town or city. Funding was given to Lakesite, Lookout Mountain, Soddy-Daisy + Walden; the County Commission will vote on funding proposals on Wednesday, July 16.

Environment

Chattanooga Gas completed a renewable, natural gas purchase — enough to save 3,416 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions that conventional natural gas extraction would have produced. The use of this biogas is considered “carbon negative,” helping the company’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. (Chattanooga Times Free Press)

Biz

Want to help shape the future of the Chattanooga Zoo? The organization is building its 10-year master plan and invites locals to complete a short survey to provide feedback. Input could impact future developments and attractions, and the survey will be open through Friday, July 25 at 5 p.m.

Number

Get ready to dial 10 digits when making a call in the 423 area. Starting Saturday, Aug. 5, locals will need to dial the 3-digit area code before the remaining seven digits for calls to connect. This is to prepare for the overlay of the 729 area code. (News Channel 9)

Edu

Students could be a click away from their next internship. The Chattanooga Internship Hub has launched, a centralized platform allowing local organizations + universities to share opportunities. The website aims to make it easier for students to find positions in Hamilton County while encouraging employers to hire local talent. (The Pulse)

Ranked

If you relish affordable hot dogs, head to the Mapco on East Main Street. A nationwide study by Gunther Volvo Cars Daytona Beach ranked the store No. 44 on its list of best gas station hot dogs. A solid score, but frankly, a 7-Eleven in Knoxville was found to have Tennessee’s highest-ranking hot dogs.

Listen

The Podcast Aquatic — the Tennessee Aquarium’s official podcast — pressed play on a new partnership to celebrate its first anniversary. The local organization will work with The Tennessee Conservationist, the official magazine of Tennessee’s state parks. The collaboration hopes to further the podcast’s impact and highlight more conservation efforts.

Answered

Which dinosaur species was not believed to roam North America?

31.8% of NOOGAtoday readers correctly guessed the Velociraptor.

Earlier this week, we dug into Chattanooga history by looking at five creatures that likely roamed the area before humans did. There’s no evidence the Velociraptor lived anywhere near the Scenic City — it was discovered in the Gobi Desert and was believed to dwell in Central Asia.
