Hutton & Smith Brewing Co. recently brewed up a partnership with the UTC Honors College for its first-ever brewing course.

As a companion lab to the lecture “The Barbarians Beverage: A Natural History of Beer” instructed by Professor J.-M. Colvin, seven students not only learned the history of beer, but got to experience it firsthand.

During the 16-week course, the students learned about the application of water, hops, grain, and yeast in beer + the brewing process. They then began to design a recipe modeled after an old-world style beer — creating Shelby, an Irish Red Ale.

For the students’ final exam, they will present the ale to the public, explaining what they learned + Hutton & Smith’s owner Joel Krautstrunk will provide tasting notes on three different old-world style beers.

Folks are invited to try the beer for themselves on Friday, April 28. Check out the details .
