Earlier this month, Brent Toderian – thought-leader, city planner and urbanist based in Vancouver – tweeted this question: “If you had the power to ban just one thing from cities in order to make them MUCH better, OTHER THAN CARS (too easy), what would that one thing be?”

And it went viral, getting 4.5K+ responses – causing it to trend on Twitter. Following his lead, we took to our own social media accounts to ask the same question (with a slightly, “more positive” spin on the verbiage).

So, Noogans: If you had the power to change just one thing in Chattanooga in order to make it MUCH better, what would that one thing be? Here’s what some of you said:

  • “More restaurant/bars actually on the river” — @pacob1975

  • “Embracing street art EVERYWHERE in the city. Not just on North Shore and along the river.” — @loreofnooga

  • “Public transportation needs to continue to expand. It saves gas, reduces traffic, and fosters a sense of community. And CARTA really needs to start taking cards as payment. Most people don’t carry around cash anymore.” — @kat_suhail

  • “More quality public schools.” — @finn.theweaver

  • “Helping the homeless population. I work in the Southside / St. Elmo area and our community needs more programs for at risk.” — @ladygrantham1977

  • “I would say keeping the city and highways clean. Driving through Chattanooga you’d never guess how beautiful it is because the highway looks so trashy and dirty.” — @nooga_mel

  • “More GOOD grocery stores...Publix, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, etc.” — Marga J.

  • “One simple, ‘affordable’ change would be to place recycling bins next to the trash bins throughout downtown.” — Matthew M.

  • “Reasonable housing prices.” — Kathleen P.

  • “I have to say interstate bypass ... a loop from Wildwood to Soddy to Cleveland to Ringgold/Dalton to Wildwood would be amazing!” — James K.

  • “Make all parking at public parks like Coolidge Park free every day.” — Lynn S.
