Some of our favorite sandwiches in Chattanooga, TN

Table of Contents

Did you know that August is National Sandwich Month? From the classic grilled cheese to three-layered sandwiches that will be sure to fill you up — Chattanooga has them all.

We know you probably have your go-to sandwich spot to enjoy on your lunch break, but here are some of our favorite sandwiches from local restaurants that we (and some of our readers) recommend you try out.

🥪 The Classics

The California Club | Niedlov’s Café & Bakery | Turkey, Swiss cheese, jalapeño mayo, black peppered bacon, avocado spread, heirloom tomatoes, and bibb lettuce served on Niedlov’s 6 Grain 4 Seed bread.

Editor Kristen here. This sandwich might just be my favorite of all time. I even had this sandwich three times during one week because it absolutely just hits the spot.

Turkey & Goat Cheese | Niedlov’s Café & Bakery | Turkey, cranberry chutney, goat cheese, homemade mayo, arugula, and pickled radish served on grilled sourdough bread.

Another Niedlov’s recommendation comes from one of our readers Shannon S., who said it’s her current favorite sandwich: “It’s SO yummy!”

Hella Ham and Hella Chedda’ | Lil Mama’s Chicago Style Hoagy | Ham, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, oregano, mayo, mustard, and salt + pepper.

🥪 Chicken sandwiches

The Rainbow Sandwich | The Purple Daisy Picnic Café | A three-layered sandwich with homemade chicken salad, pimento cheese, and cucumber spread served on crustless white or wheat bread.

Reader Kristi B. says this delicious sandwich is her favorite in town. “A close second is the chicken salad sandwich at Marsha’s Backstreet Café. Simple and delicious.”

J.F.C. Sando | The Bitter Alibi | Seasoned Panko fried chicken, shredded lettuce, tomato, Sambal pickles, and sriracha mayo served on a toasted bun.

Chattanooga Hot Chicken Sandwich | The Daily Ration | Fried chicken dipped in house-made Hoff’s buffalo sauce, lettuce, tomato + garlic herb aioli served on a local bun. Pro tip: We recommend you double dip it and add queso.

🥪 Breakfast sammies

Bagel Breakfast Sandwich | Sleepyhead Coffee | Beyond sausage, Just Egg, and Violife cheddar cheese served on your choice of plain or everything Niedlov’s bagel.

Catfish Sando | Rosecomb Bar | Cornmeal fried catfish, tangy remoulade, crunchy slaw, and a house pickle. Only available during Rosecomb’s Sunday brunch.

Croque Madame | Kenny’s | City ham, gruyere, bechamel, egg, and herbs served on sourdough.

🥪 Not your average Grilled Cheese

Short Rib Grilled Cheese | Milk & Honey | Chipotle braised short rib, horseradish mayo, pickled red onion, caramelized onion spread, arugula, and white cheddar served on sourdough.

This recommendation comes from reader Emily L. “Milk & Honey has THE best sandwiches. The short rib grilled cheese is insane.”

Say Cheese | Rembrandt’s Coffee House | Mozzarella, cheddar, Swiss cheese, and truffle oil on your choice of wheat or sourdough.

South Carolina Grilled Gooey | River Street Deli | Housemade smoked cheddar pimento cheese with your choice of ham or turkey.

🥪 Vegan + Vegetarian

Bar-B-Q Sub | Sluggo’s | Choice of tofu or seitan covered in homemade barbecue sauce, vegan mayo, and sliced pickles served on a large whole wheat hoagie roll.

Editor Brianna here. I always feel like Marshall from “How I Met Your Mother” when describing this sandwich — I get it made with seitan + it’s never done me wrong.

Hawaiian Panini | Real Roots Café | Barbecue jackfruit, in-house “mozzarella,” fresh pineapple, dill pickles, and vegan mayo.

Falafel Rider | Ankar’s Hoagies | Blended chickpeas and parsley mixed with tahini + special sauce, fried and served on pita bread with pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and sauce.

🥪 Bonus

If you’re up for a ~45-minute drive from downtown, reader Treston T. recommends stopping by Mountain Goat Market in Monteagle, TN. “I literally dream about their sandwiches.”
