In honor of NOOGAtoday’s parent company launching 865today in Knoxville over the summer, we thought it was time to revisit our road trip series — this time with a trip to the Scruffy City.
With easy access to the Smokies, Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, and scenic waterways, this is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors in a new setting.
Things to do
Once you’ve had your fill of Chattanooga’s views, try the various trails in Knoxville. Stick within city limits for hikes like Ijams Tharp Trace Trail, or take advantage of Knoxville’s proximity to the Smokies for a hike just outside of town.
While you’re at Ijams Nature Center, consider checking out what else it has to offer before or after your hike. Explore the treetop adventure park, rent a kayak or SUP, or try climbing at Ijams Crag.
Knoxville is also an excellent city for birding — in fact, more than 220 bird species have been sighted at Seven Islands State Birding Park.
Places to eat
- Knox Farmacy | Besides the Instagrammable interior, this local favorite also offers up a darn good biscuit.
- The Tomato Head | Start your weekend on a spicy note with huevos rancheros or a breakfast pizza. Pro tip: Visit the Market Square location to sit on the patio and walk around after dining.
- Kefi | If you’re searching for a slightly more elevated dinner, this Greek spot comes highly recommended. Try this Karpouzi cocktail.

You can walk to UT’s campus from this Knoxville Airbnb.
