DYK? Erlanger Health System boasts the only Level I Trauma Center in the region.

It’s an impressive fast fact, but even more impactful when you understand exactly what it means. (Side note: Now more than ever, we’re so thankful for our dedicated healthcare workers as institutions like Erlanger. 💛)

What is a trauma center?

A trauma center is essentially an extension of an Emergency Room that provides the highest level of care for critically ill and traumatically injured patients. Trauma, general and pediatric surgeons, plus expert clinicians and nurses, are on duty 24/7 for round-the-clock care. Erlanger’s trauma center serves 63 surrounding counties in Tenn., Ga., Al. + N.C.

What does Level I mean?

Trauma centers undergo an evaluation process conducted by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), in which they’re designated Level I, II, II, IV or V, with Level I being the highest. A Level I Trauma Center provides comprehensive care to an entire region + cares for every aspect of injury, from prevention to rehab.

Hopefully, you’ll never have to experience a trauma center firsthand. But – just so you can be best prepared in the future (especially if you have accident-prone kids in the house) – here’s a guide for where to go depending on your situation:

  • When to go to the doctor’s office
  • When to go to urgent care
