Help build better centers

Community centers are hubs of connection, learning, and support — weigh in on how to make Chattanooga’s even better. | Photo by @cityofchattanooga
Did you know there are 20 community centers in Chattanooga? In an effort to make sure these spaces meet the needs and dreams of all Chattanoogans, the city’s Neighborhood Services Division has launched its Your Center, Your Future survey.

From more recreational activities and exercise classes to community service projects and educational programming — you can share what programs, services, and improvements would benefit you and your household the most.

Ready to share your thoughts? Folks can take the survey online in English or Spanish —a paper copy may also be requested from your nearest community center.

The survey will remain open until Monday, Feb. 17. Bonus: Participants who provide their name + contact information will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win lunch with Mayor Tim Kelly.

History

This ancient artifact is a must-read

Presented by Southern Adventist University

We all learned our ABCs in Kindergarten, but do you really know where the alphabet comes from?

The Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum at Southern Adventist University offers unique insight into that answer.

Visitors can now see the number one linguistic discovery in the history of biblical archeology, a small ivory lice comb inscribed with the oldest complete alphabetic sentence ever found.

Archaeologists from Southern Adventist University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem uncovered the artifact among the ruins of an ancient city in Israel in 2016.

The symbols carved into the Ivory Comb (yes, like a hair comb) offer a glimpse of early communication methods among humans.

What does the sentence say? You’ll have to see for yourself.

The exhibit housed within the Lynn H. Wood Archaeological Museum on campus is free, and the artifact will be on display until Friday, May 2. Learn more about and see the museum’s hours.
