Photos: New exhibit offers historical look at Hunter Museum through the years

Authored By Staff Report

The Hunter Museum of American Art — which includes three vastly different buildings — has opened an exhibit highlighting the unique architectural character of the museum throughout the years. On view in the Douglas Fir Hall, “Evolution Of A Museum” follows the story of the original structure, a 1905 mansion, through 1975 and 2005 additions. The original mansion was owned by George Thomas Hunter and the museum will offer a smaller exhibit called “The Legacy of George Thomas Hunter” coinciding with “Evolution Of A Museum.” The exhibit opened Aug. 17 and is currently on view. "[The exhibits] pay tribute to both the museum’s roots and to the vision of community leaders over the decades who have supported the growth of this wonderful institution. We hope the exhibit will provide some ‘a-ha!’ moments for locals as well as give visitors to Chattanooga a better understanding of how the museum has grown along with the city through the years.” Officials with the Hunter Museum provided several photographs from the exhibit:
