Some Unum employees are losing their jobs because the company is outsourcing their positions. Nooga.com asked Unum how many employees are affected and a spokeswoman said it’s a “small portion” of the company’s intake department, which is responsible for the initial processing of claims and requests. A company called EXL, which Unum already works with, is taking over some of that work, which primarily involves data entry and document indexing, Assistant Vice President of Corporate Communications Mary Fortune said via email. She also said:

The reduction of roles is a very small percentage of the overall Benefits organization of 3,400 people, but we know there’s a significant impact to every person affected. We’re committed to strong support for every employee throughout this transition, some of which will last through the first quarter of 2019. Unum hires about 1,200 people a year, and we have more than 400 openings in our Benefits area alone. We offer extensive support for employees for both internal and external job searches. We provide flexibility to employees as they look for another position, including time to train, interview and seek other roles. Employees are eligible to apply for opportunities at Unum consistent with their skills and interests. In addition, we offer educational and retraining grants to any employee affected by job elimination. Moving this work to a partner allows us to dedicate internal resources to more complex work that more directly affects the customer experience. For the work we are moving, EXL can deliver faster turnaround times, more flexible staffing, simplified processes, and more consistent progress toward automation and technology improvements. Our local employment numbers haven’t changed much over the years, holding steady at about 2,800-2,900.
