After years in the making, Chattanooga food hall Market South is opening today. That’s right. TO-DAY. In case you need a refresher: The building, which will house several eateries, is in the Southside Historic District at 1501 Long Street in the former Enzo’s/Grocery Bar location. You may have noticed over the last few weeks the local version of the iconic Nashville Wings mural on the side of the building.

Bonus: Last February, we asked where you wanted to see a food hall go – thanks Jason H. for commenting with this exact location. 👏

Here’s what to know:

Doors open at 7 a.m. Be the first to try The Green Room, a craft coffee, cocktail and vinyl record shop. ☕

Then, open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. for lunch and dinner:

  • Chow Main – Asian-wok-style
  • The Grand Trunk Railroad – Indian Street food
  • Slow Rise – Roman-style pizza

Starting at 3 p.m. you can check out Five Wits Brewing Co. and Lil Oso, which is the first tenant of R&D Test Kitchen (which is expected to host 4 rising chefs + new restaurants per year).

Owners Taylor and Mike Monen — who are behind the MF restaurant group which includes local favorites Milk and Honey, Community Pie, Urban Stack, Taco Mamacita + Hi-Fi Clydes — have been working on the concepts at Market South for more than two years.

Lil Oso at R&D Test Kitchen

The test kitchen is a rotating restaurant incubator + Lil Oso is the first tenant, which is run by Chris Greer. We don’t know a lot of details about what the menu looks like, but by the looks of their website, it will be good.

Lil Oso is opening in Market South’s R&D test kitchen.

How it works:

  • Aspiring chefs + restaurateurs apply for a three-month residency.
  • If chosen, they get to use the fully equipped R&D kitchen rent-free to test their concept and prepare to open their own business.
  • The Monens mentor the chefs/restaurateurs.

Five Wits Brewing Company

After nearly a decade working in Denver, Colo., Chattanooga native Nathan Michaels came home and brought long-time Denver brewers, Elliot Kehoe and Bryan Harris to open Five Wits.

The trio met while working together at Denver’s Great Divide Brewing, which is one of the Rocky Mountain region’s oldest and largest craft breweries. Five Wits Brewing Company’s lead brewer Elliot Kehoe has been working to create an ideal hand-crafted beer line-up, which will complement other area offerings.
