Many big box stores and major retail chains are closing across the US, including in Chattanooga. But for the love of all things local, we’re exploring some of our favorite unique alternatives to the familiar franchises.

Joann Fabrics and Crafts
The craft store’s Gunbarrel Road location is set to shut down following a court approval to close its remaining stores. Luckily, you can find plenty of art supplies — from paints to frames — at Gannon Art on Brainerd Road.

For our yarn enthusiasts, we recommend checking out Chattanooga Yarn Co. located inside of Northgate Mall.

Lastly, head to nearby Red Bank to shop from The Knot & Needle, where you’ll find embroidery + needle felting kits. Bonus: Check out their upcoming class schedule.

Party City
The chain store is going out of business. Although our inner child will miss Disney-themed party sets, there are plenty of options to throw a stellar soiree with the help of locally owned businesses.

BlowUP Chattanooga can take care of the balloon arches + custom balloons for your parties. Additionally, Reeves Mackenzie Party Styling can handle making your Pinterest board gathering ideas a reality.

Big Lots
The two Chattanooga area locations of this discount store have closed, but if you’re looking for deals on furniture and home goods, you have plenty of options.

Furniture Merchandise Outlet on East Main Street has wallet-friendly furniture options + you can score some great second-hand deals at our many thrift + consignment shops in town.
