How to celebrate National Public Lands Day in Chattanooga

Two ways to get your hands dirty for a good cause this Saturday, Sept. 27.

Volunteers in bright vests trim foliage along a wooden boardwalk, surrounded by lush, green trees. The scene conveys teamwork and nature conservation.

Trimming vegetation is just one of the ways volunteers can help.

This Saturday, Sept. 27, people all over the country will roll up their sleeves for National Public Lands Day. It’s the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event, and it’s dedicated to preserving shared green spaces.

Whether you’re a long-time Chattanoogan or new in town, volunteering is a great way to connect with nature and your community. Here are two opportunities to get involved on Saturday:

  • Citizens Cemetery | 820 East 3rd St. | 9 a.m.-12 p.m. | Help clean up Chattanooga’s oldest cemetery by picking up litter, trimming vegetation, and restoring headstones. Gloves and tools will be provided. Volunteers can sign up online.
  • Greenway Farms | 5051 Gann Store Rd. | 9 a.m.-1 p.m. | Pitch in to beautify the trails + help out with a grassland BioBlitz — a mini-expedition to identify local plants and wildlife.

Pro tips: Be sure to bring water and wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
