Before we know it, more than 2,500 athletes from around the world will be right here in the Scenic City for IRONMAN Chattanooga.
If it feels like we just had an IRONMAN event — you’re not imagining things. That was IRONMAN 70.3, which is half the distance of the race happening on Sunday, Sept. 28. This time, athletes will swim, bike, and run a total of 140.6 miles.
Whether you’re planning to cheer them on, volunteer, or steer clear of the area, we’ve got you covered with the details.

How to watch
- The race starts at 7:30 a.m.
- All three parts of the triathlon will finish at Ross’s Landing.
- You can cheer on the athletes at several designated spectator zones along the course.
- You can also download the interactive Ironman Athlete Tracker App to follow athletes in real time. Pro tip: You can track multiple athletes at a time.
- Transportation officials recommend parking in the downtown garages and lots. Spectators can also use the Free Electric Shuttle (beginning at 9:30 a.m.) or Bike Chattanooga bike share system (24/7).
How to volunteer
- Hundreds of volunteers are still needed to help with key race-day tasks like athlete check-in, handing out food and water, crowd support, and more.
- You can apply, view available shifts, and explore all the different volunteer roles online.
Traffic + closures
These roads will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 9 a.m. through Sunday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m.:
- Riverfront Parkway (between Aquarium Way + Molly Lane)
- Chestnut Street (between Aquarium Way + Riverfront Parkway)
- Power Alley (from the parking lot to Riverfront Parkway)
- Southbound Veterans Bridge ramp to Riverside Drive
On race day, you can also expect closures on Hwy. 27 South on ramps between Hwy. 153 and 4th Street downtown.
