Starter your engines. Sourdough is soaring in popularity, and according to Google Trends, so is interest in making your own — surpassing 2020’s.

If you’re among those baking some new habits into your life via flour and yeast, here are a few ways to get in on the action in Chattanooga:

  • Keep your eyes on the calendar at The Chattery, where regular classes give newbies an intro to sourdough making, plus snacks, drinks, samples, and a loaf you can take home after.
  • Turn to the specialists at The Sweet & Savory Classroom, where they often feature an intro into making the bread type for yourself.
  • Founded in 1998, the 22-acre Crabtree Farms is inviting beginners to “roll up your sleeves and dive into the art of sourdough breadmaking.”
A piece of sourdough focaccia, with cheese and jalapeno sits on a wire rack by a window. There are discolorations across the bread as light shines in, with some bits more cooked than others, and a crust surrounding the outer layer.

Cassy at Rustic Rise knows how to bake.

For those who prefer their loaves made by an expert, there’s a bunch of spots around town to get your fill of doughy goodness. We’re fans of microbakery Rustic Rise’s jalapeno and white cheddar sourdough focaccia, the rustic sourdough baguette at Niedlov’s, and the rotating menu choices at Bread & Butter. If you want to sample the goodies from these spots, make sure to check out their ordering options. Sometimes, you need to plan ahead.

Pro tip: If you’re picking up some tasty treats at any of Chattanooga’s bakeries, from our experience, the apron-laden are typically willing to offer some friendly advice for beginner bakers eager to learn more.
