While it might seem like we have way more time on our hands these days, many of us find ourselves suddenly tasked with being teachers, babysitters + parents all in one, in addition to working from home. Maybe you’ve even felt pressure to learn a new skill or hobby during this time. But here’s a case for something different: doing *nothing*.

The Dutch call it “niksen.” In Italy, it’s “dolce far niente,” a.k.a. “the sweetness of doing nothing.” Many of us like to think of it as “mindfulness.” Whatever you call it, turning off your devices, sitting in silence + tuning out your worries for a few minutes has some serious health benefits, like:

  1. Boosting creativity. The time spent on pause helps your mind expand, allowing for new thoughts to bubble up. It’s why we get some of our best ideas in the shower. 💡
  2. Connecting with your true feelings. Quiet time can help you identify your gut feelings + react accordingly. ❤️
  3. Allowing your brain to reset + restore. Time spent doing can benefit your brain like sleep does, helping your mind reset so you can be more productive after. 🧠
  4. Letting the body rest. All that busyness impacts your body, leading to fatigue and even aches and pains. 💪
  5. Reducing stress. Meditating or simply sitting quietly can have a calming effect, reducing the effects of stress on your physical + mental health. 💆
