Editor Brianna here, and I love Halloween. If you’re like me, the magazines that came in the mail filled with premade costumes each year simply didn’t cut it as a child. You, like I, were a make-it-yourself kinda kid.

The benefits of making your own costume are endless — you often save money, have more fun with it, and end up with a costume that’s more unique and interesting.

This year, Editor Kristen + I decided to try thrifting our costumes from Northside Neighborhood House, because we can’t think of anything much ghouler than a one-of-a-kind costume that also supports local .

Here are some of the costumes we pieced together from the store:

  • Carrie
    • We found | Pink prom dress
    • You add | Fake blood
  • The Mask
    • We found | A bright orange suit
    • You add | Creepy green mask or face paint
  • David Rose
    • We found | Black-and-white striped sweater, funky jewelry + pants
    • You add | The sass
  • Minnie Mouse
    • We found | The cutest red + white polka dot dress and a Minnie Mouse cap
    • You add | Yellow heeled shoes
  • Jess Day
    • We found | A dress + sweater combo that perfectly matches one of Jess’s outfits
    • You add | The roommates
  • Heather Chandler
    • We found | A plaid skirt, white button-down shirt, and red blazer
    • You add | A croquet mallet + resting witch face that’s better than Brianna’s

Northside Neighborhood House’s three thrift store locations also feature a specific Halloween costume rack filled with various costumes, masks, and wigs.

And of course, there’s always more thrift, consignment, and vintage stores around town that you can check out — so go make an awesome costume that gives ‘em pumpkin to talk about (and don’t forget to share your creations with us on Instagram ).
