This summer, a historic feat is taking place in our backyard (but really, the riverfront) as Paddle Georgia — the largest week-long canoe/kayak camping adventure in the country — launches its first expedition through the Tennessee River to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
The journey will begin Sunday, June 15 + run through Sunday, June 22, covering over 80 miles. Alright, paddlers, let’s break down the trip.
The journey + Chattanooga sights
- Kick off in nearby Ringgold, GA for a 10-mile run to Graysville.
- Travel from Graysville to Chattanooga’s Sterchi Farm Trailhead (16 miles) — you’ll see: Audubon Acres, Camp Jordan (campsite), Shallowford Ecological Preserve + the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway.
- A 6-mile dash during the Chattanooga Cha Cha through downtown — you’ll see: Coolidge Park, the Tennessee Aquarium + have the day to explore.
- Another 7 miles around Moccasin Bend — you’ll see: Lookout Mountain + participate in a clean-up day before camping at Tennessee River Place.
- Travel 13 miles to the heart of Tennessee River Gorge — you’ll see: Raccoon Mountain Boat Ramp, Walden Ridge + Elder Mountain.
- Head through Nickajack Lock and Dam for 14 miles and another 12 miles past the Sequatchie River.
- End with a 16-mile paddle to Alabama’s Guntersville Lake.

Need to knows
- This camp is open to those ages 4-84.
- Outside of paddling, there are nightly educational programs — think: mussel grubbing + fish seining.
- No wilderness training needed — all campsites have amenities like air conditioning and washroom facilities + meals are catered.
- You can take on the full week (adult pricing is $460) or pick a package to travel only 2-4 days (adult pricing starts at $160).
- Scholarships are available to apply for breaks in the costs.
- Bonus: The money goes to protecting our waterways — Paddle Georgia has raised more than $900,000 since its inception.
Registration is now open — spaces are limited to around 250-400 paddlers, so plan ahead.
