As someone who considers themselves a hands-on learner, being able to practically apply concepts is a crucial part of my learning process. Kristen here, and I recently got to check out the Global Center for Digital Innovation at ChattState — and I have to say, I wish I had access to these tools while I was in school.

Want your own inside look? Keep reading to check it out and learn how you can Try This.

What we tried:

We got to tour the lab, workshops, and tools available for use in the Global Center for Digital Innovation (GCDI). The GDCI can be utilized by K-12 Hamilton County students, ChattState students, and community makers to help turn their ideas into reality.

Students from STEM School Chattanooga got to show us how they take concepts from other courses — such as algebra and art history — and turn them into tangible projects in the GCDI. We even got to see some of these tools in action.

What not to miss:

The multiple certifications students can receive while completing their projects. Hamilton County School students can earn micro-credentials as they demonstrate proficiency in technical skills during their projects, leading to industry certifications. Since March 2020, Hamilton County high school students have earned 15 certifications using the GCDI.

Bring your creations to life using 3D printers, laser cutters, or resin printers to create your prototype. The GCDI has micro-controllers that students learn how to control and program to power their projects.

We also got the chance to see student projects like lamps and figurines that were solely powered through these components.

What we’re still talking about:

With ~35 labs in total, Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga have the most fab labs + e-labs (think: spaces where students can prototype solutions to authentic problems using digital and traditional fabrication) in the world.

By having access to the GDCI, students are able to learn content standards while gaining proficiency in both essential skills and technical skills.
