Ever wanted to be that person at the bar with a good book? That experience will be universal at The Reading Room, a bar and used bookstore, coming soon to Chattanooga.

Talk about a new meaning to “reading the room.” Owner Linden Marno-Ferree said the concept came mainly from her love of books and her time living in Boston, MA + working at Harvard Bookstore, before moving to Chattanooga and entering our local service industry scene (you might recognize her from ukko).

“I imagine myself 15 years from now serving drinks and hanging around books and helping people find the book for them,” Marno-Ferree said. “And that just sounds like a really pleasant existence.”

You can sit in your own corner to read or mingle among others in this open space.

Let’s set the scene, shall we? Imagine a space with a dark wood bar, a floor-to-ceiling wall filled with books for purchase (supplied through a partnership with the Chattanooga Public Library), and a mix of tables for studying, conversing, and spending time with your friends.

Marno-Ferree said she’s putting together a collection of antiques and vintage finds for table lamps to set the mood lighting + will incorporate different types of book crafts into the interior design.

She also hinted at different ways she would love to see the space being used. From independent book clubs coming in to acting classes and more, she said she wants it to be an appreciation of all arts. Interested in hosting something? You can inquire via email on how to get started.

While Marno-Ferre is keeping the exact location a mystery for now, folks in the Brainerd neighborhood might want to keep their eyes open. Psst, she also disclosed some insider knowledge of possible businesses like a restaurant, a performance space, and a dive bar that are interested in utilizing the same area — but more on that, later.

The Reading Room is expected to open by late spring + will operate from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. with a mix of family-friendly and 21-and-up-only hours — we’ll be back closer to time to reveal the inside look.
