Chattanooga installs smart traffic systems to ease congestion

New vehicle detection technology is expected to help traffic flow more smoothly and improve safety across the city.

Ever get stuck at a busy traffic light for far too long, especially during rush hour?

The City of Chattanooga is working to fix that by installing Gridsmart Camera Vehicle Detection Systems at several intersections around town.

Here’s how it works: Cameras detect how many vehicles are waiting and send that information in real time to the city’s traffic management team. That lets them adjust the lights based on actual traffic, helping cars move more smoothly.

“By leveraging smart technology, we are taking a proactive approach to traffic management that reduces congestion, saves commuters time, and improves safety across the city,” said Corey Givens, Manager of Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Detection systems are already in place at these intersections:

  • Bonny Oaks Drive + Hickory Valley Road (near Enterprise South)
  • Cherokee Boulevard + Manufacturers Road (North Shore)
  • Frazier Avenue + Barton Avenue (near Veterans Bridge)
  • East Brainerd Road + Panorama Drive (near I-75)
  • East Brainerd Road + N Concord Road (near I-75)

They’ll also be installed soon at several spots along Highway 153, including Gadd Road, Grubb Road, and Winding Lane, as well as near Northgate Mall, Target, and Walmart. The city hopes to have all installations done by mid-December.
